Today’s Simple Nature Sketch

I think Irises present an elegant presence with their stately appearance. They demand attention with their intense rainbow colors and sword-shaped leaves. Both their height and leaves, add to their attractive structural appearance.

An interesting tidbit I came upon, is that they were believed to be named after “Iris”, the Greek goddess of the rainbow.  She personified the rainbow and was also a messenger to the Olympian Gods.

I think Irises serve as a wonderful addition to springtime blooms! They happily join an array of  blooms, rejoicing in the rebirth of the land.

How about you? Do you like Irises?

The iris above and a couple more flowers are part of my newest painting in progress. I just couldn’t resist taking these beauties home when I saw them in the flower shop. I initially purchased one iris, but went back for two more. I will need replacements as I work along on the painting. The thing about working from life is you can bank on the flowers always changing, both in shape and blooming stages. Always  a happy challenge!

The set up I decided upon, although the flowers shifted here–there will be more overlapping than shown in my set up.

I love when buds are unfurling! I find the whole process magical and fascinating to watch.  Especially in a time-lapse video. Here are a couple of close up photos of my iris and a time-lapse video of an iris opening. Enjoy!

While at the supermarket last week, the florist mentioned that they had a sale on single roses. Well what is a girl to do with that news, but buy two pretty roses. Off I went with one cream and one coral colored roses.

They don’t last long, however, it was really nice having their presence in my studio. They felt fresh, adding a splash of color with the hopes I would soon be cutting them from my gardens.

It has been a span of time since my last post. Things have been busy. I’m working on finishing a painting I began outside last spring of apple blossoms. I completed most of the main work from life on location. Now I’m just tweaking, adding centers to the blossoms, adding a few more leaves, painting little finishing touches and the background. I’m almost finished–here are a few work in progress shots along with where I left off last spring.

Some of the tweaks are subtle, but do make a difference in the overall presentation of the subject. I’ll post the painting again when it is completely finished.

On another note, I am taking a Branding Course through an online business called Makelight , where I have subscribed as a member. I really love Makelight and have more than gained my value from the subscription.

I know branding can sound commercial, but that isn’t the objective of this course. It is to find our unique voice and present it clearly. I always want my brand to be totally authentic and this is their philosophy as well.

I would love if you have time, to reply to this blog post sending me a few of your thoughts on any of the following. You can keep it really brief with just a few words –you don’t even have to say hello. lol

What comes to mind when you think or view my art/writing. What words, emotions, messages come to mind. Does it make you think of any other brands, artists etc. Why did you or why would you collect my work. What environments do you think it is best suited for?

Thanks so much–this will really help me get another view-point about how my work is interpreted and will help me in this course.

Warmly,

Debbie

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I just added the sketch of spray roses to my website. The roses are from my garden this past autumn. I loved drawing all the layers of petals on each small rose. These roses were from a bush I planted many years ago. Each year it never disappoints, sharing lots of blooms throughout the growing season!

This comes unframed, but you can jazz it up with any size or style of frame, making sure it is protected behind glass.

Here are a few more images of this drawing with some  progress shots.

Although our road still hasn’t been plowed after our big storm, a secret admirer delivered this cheerful bouquet! A little bag of chocolate covered jubes was also attached. I love fresh flowers, especially in the midst of winter!
