Today’s Simple Nature Sketch

I’m taking advantage of the abundance of tulips in the stores, by toting frequent bouquets home.  They are such a cheerful sign of spring. This spring bouquet held a rainbow of colors, pink, yellow and white, along with a few gorgeous violet irises and a few large stalks of pussy willows.

This sunny colored tulip lights up the space it occupies, even when it is dreary outside. I actually love how tulips appear before they open fully. Their petals nestle into each other adding mystic to the interesting parts inside.

The intriguing thing about tulips is that they continue to grow once placed in water.  A few years ago,  I had discovered this  truth during a studio painting session.  After painting tulips one evening, I walked into my studio the next day, to see they had  grown in height!

I hope you are able to enjoy the cheeriness of tulips in your area as well!

Warmly,

Debbie

Today’s Simple Nature Sketch

While browsing around my gardens today, I noticed that there was new growth arriving on my Stonecrop. The new growth was small, so I picked a sprig that had weathered the winter months.  I liked the way this sprig curved when I laid it on my sketchbook.

In the warmer months, this plant resembles tiny roses. It even has a pink hue. It is really pretty and is a nice accent in gardens. Looking forward to seeing more signs of life in the upcoming month.

Warmly,

Debbie

Even when the calendar says it’s Spring and the weather suggests it’s still winter, spring blooms give hope that warmer days are on their way.  Spring flowers march into stores, reminding one that the earth will soon soften and allow growth to take over. New beginnings will start peeking through, coloring the land once again.

Hyacinths are one of the beloved spring blooms that make their appearance in stores this time of year. Their scent is strong, as is their color.  Spirals of flowers burst upward. They seem to be saying  “Wake Up, wake up! It’s time for us to play!”

May colorful blooms brighten your days!

Warmly,
Debbie

(P.S. These petals are from a sweet hyacinth my brother and sister-in-law gave me for Easter. )

Standing Tall and Daily Sketch: Iris

Standing Tall

“Standing tall builds character and strength along life’s journey.”

This was a wild iris I painted on a 3x3in linen covered board.
I found it the day I saw a bear in Grant’s Lake, Nova Scotia! My mom loves these colors so I gave it to her as a birthday present. It sits on a small easel in her home.

Today’s Simple Nature Sketch

They were selling Spring bouquets at the supermarket.  Within the wrappings were tulips, pussy willows and irises. Who could resist!

It was Easter and I would be creating  cheery bouquets for three special people. Double satin violet ribbon adorned the vases. Their vibrant hues were well received and brought rays of sunshine to all.

I remember a  number of years ago, a clump of large irises had taken over one of my gardens. They were beautiful while in bloom, but having a short blooming season, left a large mass of greenery.

After much digging the irises were placed in tall grasses with all intentions of replanting them. Time moved on and they began to settle into their unintentional setting. The following year, the same plant bloomed once again, despite the fact it had never been planted into the ground.

Nature is always filled with surprises. It has its own rhythm and need to survive. To this day the irises have rooted into their new home;  coming to life every Spring!

Debbie
