Roams Freely

“The mind roams freely, as it travels along shorelines and the expanse of distant land.”

It was a beautiful summer morning when I set up in the park to paint this scene. I have painted it many times in the past. Powell’s Pt. Park one of my favorite places to both paint and seek solitude. I have to climb up a high perch to view this scene.

While I painted, I could look down at the beach below and also allow my eyes to roam freely across the distant view. Such a peaceful place! I’m really looking forward to painting there again this summer.

Croton or Joseph’s Coat is a new plant to my collection of houseplants. I loved how funky looking this plant was when I spotted it.  Tall speckled leaves project upwards, making it a good backdrop for lower plants. It would be a great plant to match with other more common houseplants. Hopefully, it will grow happily in its new home, as I read it can be a tricky plant to grow.

Wishing you a smooth sailing week ahead!

Warmly,

Debbie

A New View

“Golden light illuminates a new view, as sea birds noisily feast on the evening’s delights.”

Debbie Lamey-MacDonald  ©

I painted this in late autumn in Big Island, Nova Scotia, when the colors were intense. While exploring, I happened to come across a new view I hadn’t seen before. I remember how beautiful it was that evening while the sun was out and how much cooler it became when the sun dipped below the horizon.

It was so peaceful, a light lapping of water could be heard as I painted. A little piece of heaven and a wonderful discovery in an old painting haunt. I will definitely be returning to this spot again.

We have been having a few milder days, which makes it feel like spring is coming!

Warmly,

Debbie

Today’s Simple Nature Sketch

In the fall,  I leave parts of my gardens intact to enjoy during the winter months. I love the architectural look of the plants’ structure; frozen in place as if time stood still. Thin stems, ruffled leaves all devoid of colorful blooms take on an organic beauty and come to life in their own quiet way.

A dusting of white snow adds sparkle, causing one to believe pixie fairies sprinkled their glitter in the wee hours of the morning. I remember as a child marvelling at those tiny flakes on tall grasses.  I remember the grasses rustling in the frosty air and how beautiful they looked in their frozen state.

Beauty can be subtle, one just has to be awake to enjoy it!

Warmly,

Debbie

P.S. This is a little late getting to you, as I thought I had published it already.  Lots happening as I get my new studio set up. Thanks for sticking with me!

An update on my orange rose painting. We finally had a sunny day and I was able to put the finishing touches on my painting I was working on in our kitchen. I set the orange rose on my windowsill which receives late afternoon light. I love how plants are illuminated in this light! Here are a few shots I took during my session.

My rose floated in space for awhile until I anchored it with a stem and leaves.

And finally the star of the show takes a bow literally. In an earlier post I mentioned that I had to purchase another stalk of orange spray roses, as this one went to rose heaven. Here is my subject when it was bursting with energy!

When I get a good photo of my painting, I will post it for you.

Thanks for looking! Wishing you a wonderful day! xx

Babe Spray Roses: Sketch & Painting

Today’s Simple Nature Sketch

A couple of weeks ago, I visited my local florist and spotted the most gorgeous orange spray roses. Interestingly, they are named  “Babe”. I thought their name was most fitting, considering their flashy appearance.

I began to paint one of them from life. Now sometimes life gets busy and schedules get interrupted! Before, I could finish my painting, my subject  began to dry and lose its vitality. So today, I visited my florist again to purchase one more branch of Babe spray roses.

In the meantime, I was struck by the delicate organic beauty of the remaining dried roses. They stood quietly like tiny statues, frozen in time; reminiscing about their day in the sun.

I am almost finished my miniature painting of this orange rose. Now that I have fresh subjects, I will be able to put the finishing touches on it. Here are a few in progress shots of my work and subject I thought you might enjoy.

Happily, if this painting turns out, it has been spoken for already!

I placed my fresh roses in the fridge along with a couple of other flowers I purchased. My son opened the fridge door and said, “Umm, mom there are flowers in our fridge! ” lol The joys of living with an artist!! Never a dull moment!

Debbie

Sharing another Festive Miniature painting titled “A Sprig of Holly”. I absolutely love fresh holly. Every year I purchase a bundle of it from McKean’s Flowers Ltd. and place it around our home in small vases. There is something festive and comforting about seeing it sprinkled around the house. Of course anyone who has been following me for awhile knows that red berries are a favorite subject as well.

On a recent visit to my local florist I picked up a branch of hypericum berries. It is such a festive plant  this time of year. Every year I place fresh holly in small vases around our home. This year I am going to add hypericum to that collection.

Debbie
